Pictures that tell a story

Bedrule at Sunset with Harebells and the Bedrule Brocade Moth
Laura Blackwood 2005
Photomontage - the scale of things
These images shows photgraphs of Peinelheuch (the well-known Wellington Monument) and the communication masts on top of Dunion Hill, overlaid with images of the wind turbines proposed for Dunion Hill. A turbine is shown front-on and from the side, only to indicate the relative heights. The wind farm is intended to have eight turbines, and this can't give any impression of the cumulative effect. These turbine profiles are the "generic model" turbines from the Windjen Power Ltd planning application presentation now on public display at Scottish Borders Council offices. See the picture full-size.
Photos 1. Nissan pylon fire
On the 23rd of the December one of the five 200ft wind turbines at the Nissan Car plant suffered a catastrophic fire after undergoing unsuccessful attempts to repair a fault. The entire structure, including nacelle (the box on top of the tower, to which the blades are attached) and 75ft long blades were destroyed. Police were forced to close the nearby A1231 and A19 for over an hour and half, until the turbine structure had burned away, because of safety fears. Photo
Photos 2. Bowbeat
The scale of things - three photographs give an impression of the size of a turbine blade at ground level, and the foundations for a turbine. In fact, the turbines at Bowbeat are considerably smaller than those proposed for Dunion Hill. The Bowbeat turbines are 80m tall (262 ft) compared with 101m (331 ft) proposed.
